An interesting CD came into my hands this past week. Called The Droplift Project, it's not a band you can catch at your local club. What the artists have done is taken many recognizeable (and some not) sound bites from modern culture and transformed them into sound collages. Because the material they've sampled is copyrighted the artists are considered thieves by the recording industry. To get around this, they've pressed their own CD and, with the help of many comrades in arms across the country, surreptitiously mixed their product into the inventories of unsuspecting record stores everywhere, hopefully getting their CD into the hands of customers who can then join the debate over musical piracy and fair use laws.
